The river: Vorderrhein, section Ilanz – Reichenau
The Vorderrhein is one of the two source rivers of the River Rhine. It springs from the Toma Lake below the Piz Baduz close to Disentis/Sedrun and absorbs on its course various smaller streams from the sidewise valleys before reaching the confluence with the Hinterrhein about 10km before Chur.
The river gorge of the Vorderrhein between Ilanz and Reichenau can justly be named as one of the most beautiful river stretches of Switzerland. For about 16 kms the river disappears between massive gravel hills, steep chalk walls and bizarre erosive forms. The "Swiss Grand Canyon" is the result of a huge landslide at the end of the last ice age around 10,000 years ago. Then around 10-15km3 of rock from the area of the Segnes pass close to Flims into the valley previously caved by the glacier between Ilanz and Reichenau. Since this landslide, by far the largest of the Alpes, the Vorderrhein digs through the debris. This way, the river has created a unique river landscape of huge rock towers and break-offs and singular beauty.
On our trips we start at Ilanz and raft through the entire Rhine Gorge, which is largely inaccessible by car, to Reichenau. On the first half of the section offers pleasurable whitewater while the second half is a bit quieter.
